High-Speed Wireless Internet Access

What is High-Speed Wireless Internet?

High-Speed Wireless is an internet delivery method which is an alternative to ADSL (telephone line high speed) or Cable internet. High-Speed Wireless is based on 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g wireless technology and is a direct replacement for your telephone based internet access.

How does it work?

High-Speed Wireless works much like a mobile phone, but doesn't require the use of a phone line or an account with a Telephone Company. A small radio which is in the same frequency range as some cordless phones, baby monitors and microwave ovens is installed to your residence or building and is connected to your computer via a cat5 ethernet cable. This radio communicates with one of our Access Points.

How fast is it?

High-Speed Wireless operates at speeds far exceeding traditional dialup internet access. Where your existing modem may connect at 28.8 Kbps, 33.6 Kbps or the higher 56 Kbps speeds, the High-Speed Wireless connects at speeds in excess of 1 Mbps -- as high as 54Mbps. (802.11a or 802.11g)

What are the advantages?

1. Your service is on and active 24 hours a day.
2. No more hassles with dialup and unstable phone connections.
3. All data between your location and qcislands net ltd is transferred at the full capacity of the network.
4. Large attachments to your email arrive in record time.
5. No busy signals.
6. You can cancel your extra telephone line.
7. Streaming Audio and Video actually work.

Where is it available?

High-Speed Wireless is available to anyone who can "see" one of our Access Points.
qcislands net ltd has Access Points in several communities and in various places in those communities.
High-Speed 802.11b Wireless is "line-of-sight", meaning that the antenna which you place on your house or business needs to be able to have a direct line-of-sight to our Access Point. There may be some areas which have trees in the way preventing the wireless signal from reaching you. qcislands net ltd has a 55' bucket truck available to help install wireless radios high enough to clear a lot of trees. Please see "For More Information" (below) on how to proceed getting the required equipment.

My new computer has wireless built-in

Internal wireless equipment usually can transmit for a few hundred feet. Some of our Access Points are indeed very close to you and your internal wireless may very well work without purchasing additional equipment. Other access points are from 1 to 7 miles away from you depending on your location.
qcislands net ltd sells equipment specifically designed for a 1 to 10 mile link. You may be able to buy readily available wireless products from your local electronics/computer shop to connect over a short distance, however qcislands net ltd recommends a correct site survey be done first before you buy the wrong equipment for the job.

Can I do the install myself?

Yes. You certainly can purchase 802.11b/g equipment and install it yourself. qcislands net ltd can sell you the proper equipment. There are advantages to having us install the equipment, primarily that we select the best location for the optimum signal quality.

What about my modem and dial-up?

You won't need them. If you have a second telephone line dedicated to your internet modem you can cancel it. Once you switch to high-speed wireless internet, modem access will not be available to you.

How reliable is it?

We have tested the wireless system thru several storms both rain and snow, and the 802.11b/g signal punches thru without problems. Each individual's signal quality will depend on their location and the equipment which has been installed. In the unlikely event that wireless becomes temporarily unavailable, modem access is available.

What kind of problems could I experience?

Interference from other access points has proven to be challenging at times. More and more people are buying and installing their own "access point" in their house. These access points let the user connect within their house with their wireless laptop and/or X-Box live. Each of these access points operates on a channel which may or may not interfere with other access points in the neighborhood AND/OR the wireless radio which you are using to receive OUR signal. There are 11 channels available for access points, and with a little neighborly co-operation, these problems can be rectified easily.
qcislands net ltd has experience tracking down and solving these problems.
