As any dictionary can give you the meaning of a word, but not the syntax of the language, so it is with dreams.  The definitions can help, but it is the context in which these definitions are used that create the understanding of overall dream language.

To assist in your learning to understand more of your dreams, and in greater depth, the Dream Hat brings you the Dream Zoo.

Animals can be identified by books and pictures, but seeing them in a more natural setting gives one a greater understanding of their real life, in the wild.  The animal zoos which show captive animals in theme related environments, give us a chance to know more about the beasts and the birds that inhabit the world over.

The Dream Zoo gives us themes and settings to better understand the beasts and the birds that inhabit the world within.

Body Parts

A General Overview

Our symbolic relationship with body parts is rampant throughout our culture. Other cultures also use body part metaphors in their speech symbolism. We are not that different from one another. An entire book can be written on the symbolic aspects of body parts and language, so we will cover only some very basic, "tip of the iceberg" meanings here. Perhaps some of our illnesses or injuries can be symbolically reflecting a situation or mindset in our personal lives that we need to take a closer look at. Who knows?

The language of dreams emanates from the most literal parts of the mind/consciousness. Our dreams speak to us very directly in symbols. The trick is to graphically, visually perceive our own language. If your dream focuses on parts of the anatomy, chances are you can easily go through your own mental rolodex of imagery and relate it back to the dream.

Those who behave badly or selfishly in life will reflect in dreams as the "lesser" parts of the anatomy. In particular, if you dream of a person with very large genitalia, chances are they are behaving in a very aggressive, selfish way.

If you dream of a huge anus… well, how difficult is that?

Eyes

Keeping an eye on someone or something can easily manifest as eyes being tacked onto a person or event. Eyes become key and our focus is drawn to the eye or eyes. Objects or events can happen to an eye as in the saying: "in the eye of the beholder" and so we can become confused with seeing what should be painful being only "interesting".

Refusing to see or properly assess a known situation in waking life can translate to dreams of blindness .

Desire can translate into your eyes being literally, ON something or someone! If in your waking life you have your eye on a particular person, event, object, expect that you will see some aspect of this in your dreams.

If you dream that there are eyes on you, it could indicate that you are being watched, observed, desired or even stalked. You need to incorporate as many details from these dreams as you can to get your clearest message.

If you see someone’s eyes as being an unusual color or changing color, it could be that they are changing their mind or they have a good eye for color/schemes/composition, etc.

If you dream that you are going blind you could, in waking life, "be losing sight of" what is most valuable or important in your life or goals.

An inability to open ones eyes in a dream indicates that one is either being misled in waking life, or putting themselves into denial.

Nose

....Having a big nose or a wiggly nose could indicate that a person is too nosey. A person with a long nose is not only not telling the truth, but is deliberately trying to "raise a stink" or cause problems within a certain group of individuals.

Having a pointy nose would indicate good intuition. "He/she has a nose for news" or "…a good bargain"

A small nose indicates that the individual has no real information to offer.

A flat nose indicates a person rejecting an offer. "Flatly refusing an offer" or "turning their nose up at the idea of …"

Hands

...Handling a situation, inability to handle a situation, how well you are handling or will handle a situation will show when your dream brings your hands into focus. If you see another person’s hands, you could be assessing how well they are handling a situation.

Fingers

...In particular can either point as in blame, or to give direction. If in waking life, an opportunity is missed, you could easily dream of gems or other valuables slipping from your fingers.

Further on hands:

Opportunities gained, lost, obtainable or not can be seen as items disappearing from the hand.

Small hands indicates that a task or situation is more than a person can easily handle.

Large Hands can indicate a person if very helpful.

Heavy Hands can indicate a situation is being handled with excessive force or pressure. "Heavy handed."

No Hands can indicate that a person is not helpful or a person "needs a hand"

Hands that break off or fall apart with no blood and no pain indicates that the dreamer is overwhelmed by a task or situation and has little or no control over events or outcomes.

If the dreamer sees that they have no hands, they are either being told that they "can't handle" a certain situation or that they are to "keep their hands off"  of something, someone, etc.

If objects or scenes or living beings appear in your hands, these are your responsibilities/obligations "In your hands"

Arms "Forewarned is fore armed". Arms, forearms or having four arms, can indicate that we have received valid information and need to use it constructively to defend or protect our situation or personal self. If your attention is drawn to the forearms of another person, you should realize that this person has received advance information. They are "Forearmed"

Arms generally indicate our ability to hold our own in a given situation or event.

Arms falling off generally indicate a disadvantage. We are "disarmed" and therefore use as much caution as possible.

Legs Relate to tolerance. How much a person can stand is indicated by legs.

Dancing legs mean we can go forward with a project or are nearing a goal. A Broadway Play that has potential is said to "Have legs". Meaning that it will go far.

Legs falling off means we are without recourse. We don’t have a leg to stand on, indicates that we are in the wrong or not supported in our struggle. Further that we cannot stand for a certain situation continuing. This kind of dream generally indicates we need to find a way to stand up for ourselves or remove ourselves from the situation or suffer the consequences.

Legs on a table, strong or weak, tall or short, reflect an offer or other opportunity we are considering. Short legs mean that the offer is for a short-term and there is no more or greater coming. Long Legs mean that more is in store and the offer can go further than what is presently stated. Strong legs indicate that the offer is good. Weak Legs indicate the offer is insincere.

Feet:

....Large or small, equal a task (feat) accomplishment. Our sense of mobility or of being trapped will relate in our feet symbols.

Big, clumsy feet, will indicate that we are offending someone and should perhaps take a better look at our behaviors.

Having no feet: means having no "good way" out. Feet can also be stuck "Between a rock and a hard place" or trapped by visible or invisible restraints. These symbols indicate we lack the resources to remove ourselves from a situation that is frustrating to menacing in our lives. Dreamer needs to seek out constructive alternatives, or best of available options.

Head

....The Dream Hat wants you to know that the head as a symbol can mean a multitude of things and this brief summary in no way covers the largest portion of it.

Whatever is on your head, be it a hat, a building, a book, indicates where your conscience sees your responsibility. "It’s on your head," means literally, your obligation, responsibility is clear.

If your head falls off, could indicate that you have done or are about to do something unwise or unsafe.

"Losing your head" could indicate temper flares making you look stupid to those around you. (*Also, those who dream that they have defecated or urinated all over themselves) in a public place, indicates that their behaviors, generally anger related, have lost them the respect of others.

The Headless Horseman frequently a female symbol. The dreamer is being stalked by a headless horseman. This means that the dreamer is not using their head or is making very disastrous moves in their life. Often this pertains to the emotional landscape of the love and lust type. This dream is clearly a warning to rethink a certain plan of action or the consequences will be long lasting.

 Kissing

Kissing or being kissed in a dream can hold many meanings.  Even if the person you are kissing in your dream or whom is kissing you is someone you are attracted to, the dream holds deeper meaning.  Generally, kissing dreams are about people you would never find attractive in life or consider kissing.

Kissing means "information" being given or shared.  Where the kiss is committed is the key to it's meaning.  A kiss on the lips (closed) could mean that you are being asked for information that you know or feel should be kept "secret".

A kiss on the mouth (open) means that you will tell or be told information that is a "secret".  A heavy kiss (tongue) indicates that someone is trying to put words in your mouth.  You will have to be careful what you say and to whom, lest your words be "twisted" or you be credited/blamed with saying things you have not said.

A kiss on the top of the head is a "blessing".  You will find information you are looking for. An answer will "come to you."

A kiss on the chin means you will receive sad news, a disappointment.

A kiss on the right cheek indicates you will be given information that is being said "about you."

A kiss on the left cheek means you will be given information about someone near to you.

A kiss on the hand means that you will not be appreciated in the work you have done for another.  They will take credit for your work.

A kiss on the foot means that you are being difficult to deal with.

A kiss on the nose means that you will receive information that confirms your information is right/correct.

A kiss on the back of the neck means you need to be careful about what is being said "behind your back."

Shopping:

Store settings provide us with clues as to "what is in store" for us. (By now you may have gathered that "puns" are the medium frequently used by our dreams to speak to us in ways blatantly literal as well as metaphorical.) Upcoming events or situation outcomes can often be viewed in "stores".

Considering making a change in career, home, mate? Not sure if you are ready to disconnect from the old and reconnect with the new? Chances are, you’ll find your dreams take you "shopping" to help clarify your options.

We can also take a look at some of the behaviors, attitudes and beliefs we have "stored up" over the years.

(See Dream Dictionary for general meanings.)

Cities, Neighborhoods: In Peace and War

Cities, neighborhoods, frequently represent our relationship with our family (siblings, parents, etc.) If we stroll in comfort along familiar avenues or lanes or through villages, it shows we have a secure family connection, self-image and self-esteem.

If we find ourselves in eerie or threatening street scenes, we feel alienated from our families, or that we are misunderstood, under appreciated, discounted or abused by them, depending on the degree of miscommunication or dysfunction of one or more of the family members.

If we find our familiar but strange street scenes under siege, it indicates that we are unable or unwilling to stand up for ourselves for fear of conflict, retaliation or guilt arsenals being laid into us.

We may say that we are not bothered by the way our family treats us or disregards our feelings, but these dreams clearly indicate we are disturbed by the pattern. We can choose to state our position non-threateningly to others in the family, for the sake of more clearly defining who we are and what we accept, expect and want.

They may or may not make changes in how they express their love, concern or disapproval.

Once we have defined ourselves, there is nothing further to battle over. They know. They can accept or deny, but you need not try to out-maneuver, out-manipulate, over-anticipate their moves and motives.

War dreams related to family differences diminish or cease altogether once we come out openly and state what is and what is not offensive, helpful or unfair in our communication roles.

Where families try to maintain an overly controlling, abusive, or stifling grip on us after we have made it clear that it is unacceptable, we can decide if we are going to spend more or less time with them.

If the war dreams become more frightening, it is a signal that our spirit, our ego, feels threatened and is not strong enough to tolerate the abuse without damage. We can then choose to save ourselves by re-evaluating the obligation to those disrespectful people who are family that we would not tolerate, as friends.

Hair

This depicts more about our state of mind than you might think. If hair is tangled, a person is very frustrated or disturbed. If objects or animals appear in the hair, it could relate to career, home or even health. Keep in mind that these themes need the other surrounding symbols to make their meaning clear. In some cases, other surrounding symbols could reverse the meaning.

Long hair indicates a person with a lot of responsibility. A person who in life has short hair, that shows up in the dream with long hair, is a person who takes on a lot of responsibility.

Short hair, especially hair that has been recently cut, or if you dream that your hair has been cut, it could mean that you have let go of a responsibility or obligation. This is generally a constructive dream in that those who see themselves as helpers or "rescuers" in life, often need to step back and let go so that the other person can take responsibility for their own behaviors or situation.

White hair can indicate that a person is finished with whatever they are doing. Dreaming that someone’s hair has been altered to white (against their will) would likely indicate that they are no longer alive. Artificial "whitening" of another person’s hair, indicates that the person who has had their hair altered, has been taken over by another person.

Usually, this would appear in the psychic dreams of those who are seeking resolution to a problem. Either the problem no longer exists, or the person no longer exists. A person who is involved in a cult will show up in the dream as having "white" hair. This indicates that they have surrendered their personality control to others. People who are imprisoned will often show up with white hair indicating that they have no control over their environment or situation.

Grey Hair Indicates wisdom, and can indicate fatigue or health problems.

Red hair would indicate rage or anger. Especially if the hair is short. Short tempered. Long would indicate "holding a grudge".

Messy hair indicates a disorganized, even depressed individual. Could be a warning to not take on new projects at this time. Messy hair can portray a person who has "had their mind messed with" or who is likely to try and mess with the minds of others.

Missing Hair indicates that not all the information is available. One should not hurry into a decision or a commitment until one has more information.

Bald headed: A person who is not bald-headed in life, but shows up bald headed in dreams is a person who is not likely to take responsibility for any level of failure in a commitment or project. It could also indicate that this person has misrepresented their self as far as credentials, experience or know-how.

Laughing Dog Dream:

Exploring the elements of animal symbol

Many of the dreams that I interpret come from the aboriginal community. My close friends hail from many of these communities both near and far. It is especially important with the "awakening/awareness" that is occurring in and of the native peoples, native ways, that we understand how we can all relate to one another on the common ground of dreams.

Secondly, the element of animal symbols, although generally stronger and more prevalent in aboriginal people, apply to us all, universally. Which animals, and what their role is in each dream may vary, but their meanings cross cultures.

We use terms of animal attributes   in everyday language: "Strong as an ox , eats like a horse , sly as a fox , slippery as a snake , eagle eye, playful as a kitten , fly on the wall, jumpy as a cat in a room full of rockin’ chairs," etc..

There are even business terms that cross into this realm: The market was either a Bear or a Bull on Wall Street today; he/she weaseled their way out of that one; they are too chicken to stand up to the boss; stubborn as a mule … sitting duck, meek as a lamb.

Animal symbolism resides strongly in our language, therefore, in our dream terrain, this language is spoken more fluently than we realize.

The Laughing Dog Dream

This dream comes from a woman of Mohawk blood. She is in her thirties and lives with her sister and mother near Toronto.

"I was riding in a car, I think I was driving, and it was night time. There was strong moonlight. I saw these animals: a baby bear and a baby mountain lion, lying on the side of the road. I said that we had to stop and pick these animals up because they should not be left there. They weren’t moving. I didn’t know if they were dead or not, but out of respect they should not be left on the roadside.

I got out of the car and went to pick them up, to take them with us, and take care of them. In the background I could hear a laughing dog and it scared me. I was afraid it was one of those laughing dogs that could kill me. I picked up the baby animals really quickly, and drove off with them. They weren’t dead. I don’t know what they were."

This dream takes the animal that represents love and loyalty and commitment (relationship) and gives it a malevolent characteristic in the form of laughter.

The baby animals represent the strengths this woman had that she had not yet taken on. They were babies and they were dormant.

The interpretation was that she had an opportunity to do something that would improve her life. That the one person she thought would be happy for her and supportive in her brand new endeavor (baby anythings generally imply "new" aspects that will grow larger, stronger) was in fact, ridiculing her, trying to make her afraid to take the steps to improve her life.

I asked if she had recently broken off with a long term relationship (the laughing dog was in the distance) and kept it as a friendly relationship (the dog represents the loyalty). She had. And although she had been struggling for years to improve her self-esteem, her relationship had become so abusive she broke it off, but maintained a friendship out of loyalty. (Why waste all those years???)

She had also struggled financially to make ends meet and put herself through school. She had tested and interviewed for a job at a very prestigious facility over a period of 4 weeks, and as it turns out, was the only person qualified for the position.

When she told her ex about this, he ridiculed her as being unable to cope in the big city, and laughed at her saying that she would fail miserably and that the people there would hate her because she was "not one of them".

Her job was starting the following Monday. I received an update from her the following week. She loves her job! The people there are so appreciative of her work, and so friendly and helpful, and she feels as if she truly belongs where she is.

She did not let the laughing dog stop her in her dream, and she did not let the ridicule of her ex stop her in life.

Her courage and perseverance (Bear, and Mountain Lion) can now grow in her life and she can do even more to help herself. Because in the dream she did what she did out of "respect" shows that the stronger part of herself is "respect". It enabled her to find out more about herself and her potential and opened up the doors of financial opportunity and many others.

Also, the time. It was night time, darkness, but with the light of the moon. Grandmother Moon, she is called. This meant that is was her time, as a woman, and what she felt about herself as a woman, to take control of her life (driving the car). That she was alone for the first time in a long time (night time) but that she was gaining comfort in her independence, (Grandmother Moon,) insight into where she was going and what she wanted or needed to do, (road/path and illumination) thus armed, she knew she had to gather the dormant animals (gather her courage and strength) and proceed, despite the biting ridicule of the one she was loyal too.

Had she abandoned those  baby animals because of the laughing dog, she would have lost the opportunity to gain inner strength and confidence (again, Bear and Mountain Lion) and her life would have continued in the shadow of insecurity and low self-esteem.

Sometimes, in dreams, that which appears to be dead is merely dormant. Where we find our values and our courage in our dreams, is where we find it in our walking life.

Animals reflect our courage and our fears, our love and our loyalty, strength and courage, respect and ridicule.

Water, The Emotion Ocean

Water as an element, reflects a basic component of our identity. Generally, where water shows up, be it in a glass or a storm tossed ocean, it indicates the undercurrent of our emotional make-up. Rough water, cloudy water, all these things define where we need to be aware that problems could reside. With this awareness, we can take steps to better control our responses in any given situation so that we don’t drown in reckless pursuit.

For instance: We see or sense predators in the water. We are being told that our emotional reactions can get us into trouble. We may even realize that someone is trying to trigger an emotional reaction, "push our buttons" so-to-speak and we need to be aware, and respond more carefully, and thoughtfully to events.

One woman had such a dream, and once it was interpreted for her, she could see where the dangers were. She told me that the next time she had the dream, the pool was clear, safe, all the predators were gone. "The situation has cleared up," she tells me.

Seeing huge waves breaking on the shore or very near your home or vehicle indicates that an emotional involvement is overwhelming you. You need to step back and take smaller bites out of life until you regain calm and clarity in your situation.

Seeing a perfectly peaceful or calm pool is a good sign. On a spiritual level, if one dives into the serene pool, one finds themselves on a journey to the other side. Calm, clear water is an indication of trust, peace, and unity. To dive into this calm pool shows you are willing and able to gain insight and information. The absence of fear makes all things possible.

Breathing underwater is an indication that you are, in fact, in a spiritual mode. This is an indication of lucid dreaming. You are having an out of body experience and can quest for your information from this altered state.

On the other hand, if you are floundering in water, you are in a state of fear or low self-esteem that is threatening to your progress in this life. You are missing valuable information and need to re order your priorities to better suit your values.

Walking on water, well, what can I say? You perform one miracle you are expected to perform endless miracles. You may have just done what was deemed "the impossible" but through your faith, drive and persistence, you will most likely succeed. This is a moment of triumph that can spur you on to complete a goal or project, but keep in mind, the toll will be heavy and you need to pace yourself or you will lose most or all of what you have gained.

(Coming soon: Ponds, pools of water)
