The Haida Gwaii Anglers' CalendarSpring: Cutthroat trout are available to flyfishers in various pristine environs from late March onwards. The searun strain of this species inhabit local rivers & estuaries, while there are two nearby lakes that boast very healthy populations of 'resident' cutts. Spring steelhead trout ascend a number of Queen Charlotte rivers, and can be successfully angled for with wet flies till mid April.
Nearby tidal waters hold large chinook salmon, and 'mooching' for these beauties is especially enjoyable in May when migrating grey whales are often seen feeding nearby.
Summer From the beginning of June thru to the end of August, massive migrations of trophy sized chinook & coho salmon pass along the wild & majestic west coast of the Queen Charlotte Islands. Sockeye, pink, and chum salmon also abound, while halibut, lingcod, and red snapper inhabit the deep. The voyage out to the westcoast and back rivals anywhere in the Pacific Northwest for magestic seascapes. Meanwhile, freshwater cutthroat trout angling continues to be superb all summer long. And by mid August, coho & pink salmon school up in the river estuaries, providing superb beach flyfishing for both species.
Fall: Throughout September & October, healthy populations of coho salmon are to be found returning to several rivers within close range of Kingfisher Cove Lodge. The always plentiful pink & chum salmon have become favorites of visiting flyfishers, and the ever present cutthroat trout are frequently found while angling for salmon.
Winter: From early December until the following April new runs of steelhead ascend QCI rivers with every new flood.
