Yellowhead Sale History
The Yellowhead Hereford Breeders Select Sale was started in 1996. Glen Wicklund, Don Richardson, Maxine Bell along with Dan & Evan Roberts, formed the core group which saw 10 very successful sales held annually in Prince George, BC. Unfortunately, due to a lack of cattle consigned, the sales committee of Glen Wicklund, Janice Tapp and Don Richardson were unanimous in their decision to not hold the eleventh annual sale in 2006. The committee felt that they needed a commitment of thirty five head to remain financially viable but after many phone calls and personal solicitations they only had twenty two animals solidly committed to sell on the last weekend of September.
The last sale in 2005 saw 16 Hereford lots and 23 Angus lots combined to make up the sale which grossed just over $67,000. In 2006 the Angus club went their own way and will not be selling with the Hereford breeders. Several other breeds were approached to sell along with the Hereford breeders and although we had very positive feedback from several individual breeders, no other breed club was willing to join with us at this time.
The Yellowhead Hereford Club wishes to thank all the bidders, the buyers and the consignors who made the last ten sales possible. The first sale was held in September 1996 and in total the YHSS sold 368 head for $733,301 for an average of $1992.66. The high selling heifer calf, from 3-DL Herefords, sold for $3800 in 2001 and 3-DL also consigned the high selling bred heifer in 2004 which sold for $5100. All-Bull Holdings consigned the high selling cow in 2001 which sold for $4100 while Richardson Ranch had the high selling bull when “Banger” sold for $5900 the same year. Copper Creek Ranch sold the high selling “right to flush” Remitall Catalina at $7800 in 2004.
Flushes sold to Denmark and the USA, while live cattle sold into Ontario, the four western provinces and into the United States. Sale cattle performed at the top of many herds. One cow sold at Prince George went on to produce the National Reserve Champion Polled bull while another gave birth to a Calgary Bull Sale Champion.
The most successful sale was arguably in 2001 when 42 lots grossed $100,380 for an average of $2390 in a year when 31 different buyers took home cattle.
