In 1994 the Yellowhead Hereford Breeders invited proposals to create a Bull Test in our area of BC. Charlie and Lucille Belsham of the Lazy B Ranch were selected to run the program and other breeds were invited to make arrangements to create an all breeds center. The BC Hereford Association agreed to distribute all of the Hereford data collected, along with the information from the Herefords on test at Clifton’s Feedlot at Keremeos, BC.
Our test starts with an October warm up followed by a 140 day test of gain. The pen is fed a ration of alfalfa silage and barley to achieve an average gain of 3 lb. per day. Starting weights, hip heights and scrotal circumference are collected. The bulls are then weighted every 28 days and data is sent to each contributor. The final weight, hip height and scrotal circ. are measured at the end of test and semen can be evaluated at that time.
Many of the bulls are for sale by private treaty and can be picked up immediately after the test or boarded at the Lazy B till later in the spring. Other bulls are taken directly from the test to the Vanderhoof All Breeds Bull Sale or the Williams Lake Bull Sale.
The 2007-2008 Test has 128 bulls in total including 21 Herefords, Red and Black Angus, Charolais, Gelveih and Limousins
