Queen Charlotte Islands/Haida Gwaii
Haida Gwaii is an archipelago of about 150 islands, consisting of 2 main islands (Graham and Moresby) and a myriad of smaller islands that are located 60 miles off the northwest coast of British Columbia and 450 miles northwest of Vancouver.
The islands are world renowned as the "Canadian Galapagos", for their rich and diverse wildlife and scenery. This is the home of the Haida people also world renowned for their art and culture of the past and the present.
The 6,000 inhabitants live mostly in the small communities on Graham Island and the north of Moresby Island. There are only 70 miles of paved roads with a further network of logging roads.
Weather in the Queen Charlotte Islands is variable and often changes quickly. July-August daytime temperatures generally range between 16-25 C (60-70 F), evenings are cooler. The water temperature remains close to 11 C year round.
There are 2 flights daily from Vancouver with Canadian Air International and daily flights from Prince Rupert with Harbour Air. BC Ferries has 6 sailings weekly from Prince Rupert.
